This past Wednesday, this new ownership entity announced the hiring of Anja van Ginhoven, the English national team's general manager under head coach Sarina Wiegman, to serve as their global women's football operations director. This freshly established collective club ownership initiative, featuring the San Francisco-based Bay FC as the inaugural team among its holdings, has prior experience in bringing in talent from the national football governing body.
The selection in recent months of Cossington, the prominent ex-technical director for the FA, as the chief executive acted as a signal of intent by Bay Collective. She is deeply familiar with the women's game comprehensively and now she has assembled an executive team that possesses extensive knowledge of the evolution of the women's game and packed with practical experience.
Van Ginhoven becomes the third key figure of Wiegman's coaching team to depart in the current year, following the chief executive exiting before the Euros and deputy manager, Veurink, moving on to assume the position of manager of Holland, however her decision arrived more quickly.
Stepping away has been a shock to the system, yet âI had decided to exit the national setup well in advanceâ, she says. âThe terms for four years, exactly like Veurink and Wiegman had. As they re-signed, I had expressed I was uncertain whether I would. I had grown accustomed to the notion that post-Euros I would no longer be involved with the national team.â
The European Championship was a deeply felt competition as a result. âI recall distinctly, discussing with the head coach in which I informed her regarding my plans and we then remarked: âOur ultimate aspiration, how incredible it would be to clinch the European title?â In reality, dreams don't hopes materialize every day yet, remarkably, ours came true.â
Wearing a Netherlands-colored shirt, she experiences split allegiances after her time working in England, where she helped achieve winning back-to-back European titles and served on Wiegmanâs staff for the Netherlandsâ triumph the 2017 Euros.
âThe national team will always hold a special place in my heart. Therefore, itâs going to be tough, especially with the knowledge that the team are due to arrive for national team duty shortly,â she notes. âIn matches between England and the Netherlands, where do my loyalties lie? Today I have on orange, but tomorrow I'll be in white.â
You can change direction and move quickly in a speedboat. In a lean group like this one, that is simple to achieve.
Bay FC was not part of the equation when the organisational wizard concluded that a new chapter was needed, but the opportunity arose opportunely. The chief executive initiated the recruitment and mutual beliefs proved essential.
âAlmost from the very first moment we connected we had that click moment,â states she. âThere was immediate understanding. We have spoken at length on various topics around how you grow the game and our shared vision for the right approach.â
Cossington and Van Ginhoven are not alone to uproot themselves from well-known positions in Europe's football scene for a blank sheet of paper in the US. AtlĂ©tico Madridâs womenâs technical director, Patricia GonzĂĄlez, has been introduced as the organization's global sporting director.
âI felt strongly drawn by the firm conviction in the potential within the female sport,â she explains. âI have known Kay Cossington for an extended period; back when I was with Fifa, she held the technical director role for England, and decisions like this come naturally when you know you are going to be surrounded by people who really inspire you.â
The extensive expertise among their staff distinguishes them, says she, with Bay Collective among a number fresh club ownership ventures that have started over the past few years. âIt's a standout feature of our approach. Various methods are valid, but we are firm in our belief in ensuring deep football understanding,â she says. âEach of us have progressed in female football, probably for the best part of our lives.â
As their website states, the mission for the collective is to advocate and innovate an advanced and lasting environment within female football clubs, based on what works to meet the varied requirements of women. Doing that, with unified understanding, without having to justify actions for specific initiatives, is incredibly freeing.
âI compare it with going from a tanker to a speedboat,â says Van Ginhoven. âYouâre basically driving through waters that there are no roadmaps for â thatâs a Dutch saying, not sure how it comes across â and it's necessary to trust your individual understanding and experience to make the right decision. You can pivot and accelerate rapidly with a speedboat. In a small team like this, thatâs easily done.â
GonzĂĄlez adds: âHere, we start with a blank slate to build upon. Personally, our mission focuses on impacting football on a wider scale and that white paper enables you to pursue any direction you choose, following the sport's regulations. Thatâs the beauty of our joint endeavor.â
Their goals are lofty, the management are voicing opinions players and fans are eager to hear and it will be compelling to observe the evolution of this organization, Bay FC and other teams that may join.
