The Everton midfielder received a round of applause from his Everton teammates after issuing an explanation for his shocking red card during the recent triumph at Manchester United.
Gueye became the initial Premier League player to be dismissed for striking a fellow player in nearly two decades when he slapped his defensive colleague during the fixture. The Toffees' performance was remarkable as they played with a man down for 85 minutes, including added time, to achieve David Moyes' initial victory at Old Trafford as a visiting manager in 18 attempts.
'My first apology goes to Michael Keane,' Gueye stated on his accounts. 'I take full responsibility for my reaction.'
Gueye did not get an chance to converse with Moyes or his teammates at half-time. Following the match, with the away dressing room celebrating after the 1-0 win, the veteran requested to address the whole team and Keane in particular.
Gueye could still be disciplined by the club despite the manager's statement that he likes his players competing with each other. Moyes has a regular disciplinary procedure for red and yellow cards, including financial penalties, which is expected to be implemented in Gueye's case.
Everton could be without their key player until the January. The Senegalese international will serve a three-game suspension against Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest but could be selected for Africa Cup of Nations responsibilities by his national team before he becomes eligible to play against the Blues on mid-December.
'Emotions can run high,' Gueye continued. 'But nothing justifies such behaviour.'
Meanwhile, the Manchester United defender claimed his team of showing no urgency in Monday's loss, which ended their unbeaten run at five games.
The Red Devils head to Selhurst Park for the weekend noon kickoff. 'The next game is really important now,' said De Ligt. 'We must recover strongly from this display.'
