2026 Declared the Year of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are far from new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. But, their visibility has markedly exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To quantify this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the broader culture is somewhat apparent elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the trend in gaming appears particularly pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of innovative control schemes.

A number of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

When these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be entering a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
